Extremely rare and early almanac in a remarkable binding

NIEROP, Dirck Rembrantsz. van. Zaagmans comptoir almanach op 't Jaer ons Heeren Jesu Christi M.DC.LXXXI. na de Nieuwe en Oude-stijl. Versien met de jaer-marckten, paerde, beeste- en leer-marckten: daer neven een prognosticatie, op alle nieuwe, volle en quartier-maenden. De dagelijkse uuren van des maens op en onder-gangh door Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop, mathematicus. Mitsgaders de vacantien voor den Hove van Hollant in 's Graven-Hage, Utrecht, Vrieslandt, Groeningen, en de Stadt Amsterdam.

With the title and calendar printed in red and black, a large woodcut view of the Amsterdam stock-exchange on the title page, 12 large woodcuts in the calendar (1 for each month, depicting the main activities practised during this month), a small woodcut of an eclipse and a larger woodcut of a Zodiac man. Contemporary silver-tooled vellum, with on the front a central panel with a maid carrying a lance next to a book (the Bible?) on a column, and on the back a central panel with three drummers, both surrounded by an elaborate large frame block with the coat-of-arms of Holland in the "garden" of the Dutch Republic flanked by the other provincial arms at the top (the arms of the major Dutch cities at the left and right and a view of Amsterdam from the IJ at the bottom). A subtle mixture of Christian and Pagan wisdom

With large woodcut printer's device (142 x 82 mm) on verso of last leaf (with the arms of the city of Haarlem above an eagle holding a larger blank shield, here filled in by a contemporary owner); 4 woodcut illustrations and 20 repeats, representing the 24 elders, each showing one of the male elders, standing, teaching a female novice kneeling before him. Further with spaces left for initials, all filled in with uncials by hand, about 25 with penwork decoration in 1 or 2 additional colours: 1 blue 6-line initial with decorations in red and violate extending far into the margin, about 24 red 3 to 9-line (mostly 7-line) initials with lavendar penwork (1 with 2 green dots), some extending into the margin, and more than 70 2-line red initials without penwork decoration; a few spaces left for ¶-marks, also filled in in red; capitals rubricated throughout. Set entirely in Baellart's textura (99 or 100 mm/20 lines or about 14.5 point). Lacking leaf 137 (the second to last text leaf) and the final blank. Modern sheepskin. Beautiful example of a 17th-century Dutch writing master's copybook

[PETIT, Mathieu]. [Writing master's copybook].
[Arnhem?, The Netherlands, early 18th century?]. Oblong small folio (32 x 19 cm). With 18 leaves showing engraved writing examples in Dutch and French. The texts vary in subject, so they could also serve as guides for how to write a letter or an invoice, but of course also contains simple poems and proverbs. The script shows is a very neat and legible cursive with plenty of curling decorations to add onto letters or to frame the text. Leaves [4] and [11] are bigger and folded at all edges, measuring ca. 40 x 32.5 cm). (Early) 18th-century multi-coloured brocade paper over brown paper wrappers, side stitched through 4 holes, with marbled endpapers. The brocade paper shows in relief a floral pattern and has been decorated with a "colour spotting pattern" (see KB Sierpapier & marmering 9.2, 10.14 and illustration 73).
