Spectacular contemporary richly embroidered red silk binding filled with decorations made from silver thread containing an unrecorded 1637 German pocket-size devotional book for travellers

Lüneburg, Johann and Heinrich Stern, 1636 (devotional titles and colophon: 1637). 24mo in 8s with horizontal chainlines (10.5 x 6 x 5 cm). With an engraved frontispiece and engraved title-page, both with biblical scenes and the latter with a circular device bearing the Jesuit IHS monogram with motto "Manus domini protegat nos", a letterpress title-page with a small (24 mm) woodcut version of the same Jesuit device (with a larger - 30 mm - version on the verso of the last leaf), 5 divisional titles (all dated 1637: 3 with Johann and Heinrich Sterns imprint) with borders built up from typographic ornaments (that for the Latin Cantica from a series of balls and oblong spheroids, the other 4 arabesque), and a few other, mostly arabesque, decorations. Set in a tiny (44 mm/20 line or 6.5 point) Schwabacher type with the Latin passages in roman and italic. Contemporary red silk over bevelled wooden boards, both boards and the spine filled with relief decorations in a wide variety of filigree and other lavishly embroidered patterns in silver thread, a single silver peg and ring fastening with the clasp in the form of two clasped right hands, with the initials ".M.C.M. & M.C.B." on the back, and a decorative catch-plate and anchor plate, gilt and richly gauffered edges.
