Rare first and only edition of the collected poetical works of Adriaen Hoffer (Latinized: Adrianus Hofferus, 1589-1644), Lord of Bommenede, a well-known Dutch magistrate from Zierikzee and Steward-General of Zeeland, who was the centre of a circle of learned and intellectual poets, scholars, professors, regents and reformed ministers.
Related with the Teellinck family (Susanna Teellinck was his mother) and Jacob Cats (he was Cats second cousin) his strict Calvinistic religious convictions were not untouched by Pietism. In 1619 he was one of the delegates from Zierikzee at the famous Synod of Dordrecht. In his native town Zierikzee he was chosen burgomaster in 1620 and 1626 and from 1627 he was appointed as bailiff of the earls domain lands east of the river Scheldt ('Rentmeester-generaal der grafelijke domeinen van Zeeland beoosten de Schelde') as the successor of Philibert van Borselen.
According to Hollstein the title is engraved by the Dutch printmaker Crispijn de Passe the Younger (1594/1595-1670) who probably also engraved 5 of the beautiful emblems, the others are possibly the work of Jacob Cats' famous book illustrator Adriaen van de Venne (1590-1662).
Important for the literary and intellectual history of the province of Zeeland, but certainly also of the Dutch Republic during the Golden Age.
Binding slightly soiled and occasionally scratched, quire Yy is misbound, and the work is slightly foxed. Otherwise in good condition. De La Rue, Geletterd Zeeland (1734), pp. 297-301; De Vries, no. 161; Franken, L'Oeuvre gravé des Van de Passe (1881), no. 1370; Hollstein, XVI (Crispijn de Passe II), no. 186; Veldman, Ilja M., Crispijn de Passe and his progeny (2001), p. 310.
