First edition of a posthumously published satirical poem on the praise of money in the manner of Erasmus' Lof der zotheid (Praise of Folly), by one of the most important poets of the second generation of the Dutch Golden Age. Lof der Geldzucht, one of the most important works by Jeremias de Decker (1609-1666) is preceded by memorial contributions of his brother D. De Decker, Joan Blasius etc. De Decker knew the work by Erasmus of 1509 and also its Dutch translation from 1659, by his friend Jacob Westerbaen. The work was reprinted several times and was translated in German. The second part, Vervolg der rijm-oeffeningen, contains a selection of posthumous laudatory and occasional poems. As a friend of Rembrandt, De Decker planned to write a collection of poems praising his paintings, but was never able to finish the work. The present work, however, includes a poem praising Rembrandt's Christ and Maria Magdalen. Rembrandt painted a portrait of De Decker, now in The Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
The binding shows mild traces of use. The front pastedown is detached from the board, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. Otherwise in good condition. Kalff IV, 444; Molhuijsen-Blok, I, 691; STCN 850333229 (6 copies); USTC 1804334 (5 copies).
