John of Austria (1547-1578) had become the governor-general of the Low Countries in 1577. He conquered Namur and charged Antwerp, forcing the protestants and their leader, William of Orange, to retreat. This pamphlet was published soon after, asking for religious freedom, arguing that two different religions are very capable of coexisting peacefully in one state. The work was published in French in the same year, titled Requeste presentee a son alteze et Messeigneurs du conseil d'estat par les inhabitants des Païs Bas.

De Servais") on the verso of the first free flyleaf. The spine is somewhat rubbed, the head of the spine has been bumped. The work has been bound with 24 blank leaves/ Otherwise in good condition.
