First and only edition of an illustrated history of the University of Groningen, likely printed to celebrate its 40th birthday. The work contains biographies and large portraits of its most famous professors, including Rudolf Agricola (1443-1485), Ubbo Emmius (1547-1625), Wessel Gansfort (1419-1489), Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1641), and Regnerus Praedinius (1510-1559). Twelve of these portraits are engraved by Steven van Lamsweerde (ca. 1620-1686), two by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger (1594-1670), and one by Theodor Matham (born 1589). The others are unsigned.
The binding is slightly soiled, remnants of a paper label on the front board. The bookplate on the front pastedown has been removed, the title page has been cut somewhat short, without affecting the engraving, a water stain in the gutter of the first 10 leaves, the work is somewhat browned, small tears in the margins of some of the plates. Otherwise in good condition. Van Someren 154; STCN 822591863; USTC 1824493; Willemse E18.
