Comprehensive collection of bilateral and multilateral treaties detailing the diplomatic history of the Dutch Republic during the Eighty Years' War until the beginning of the 18th century. The first treaty concerns the Union of Delft (25 April 1576) with which the provinces of Holland and Zeeland were united in a federation led by William of Orange. It is followed directly by publications of the Pacification of Ghent (8 November 1576) and the Union of Utrecht (23 January 1579), after which all treaties in the present work were drawn up by the United Provinces of the Netherlands (also known as the Dutch Republic) and other leading European powers.
Unsurprisingly, several treaties concern the very strained relationship between the Dutch Republic and Spain during and following the Eighty Years' War (1566/68-1648), including the Twelve Years' Truce (1609-1621, see treaties 4-6) and border conflicts in Flanders after the end of the war, since that was a major event in Dutch diplomatic and military history during the 16th- and 17th centuries. The other treaties, the majority in this binding, concern - also unsurprisingly - trade, commerce, and the establishment and maintenance of international trade routes by land and sea. The majority of the treaties are in Dutch and many are included multiple times in different languages (Latin, French, and even one in Portuguese).
