First and only edition of the German translation of a work on attacking and defending fortresses, by the Swedish major general Johan Bernhard Virgin. The work is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the faults in the existing forts, particularly in Sweden, with remarks on how to make them more sufficient. Virgin describes, for example, new and improved ways for placing cannons and mortars. The second section notes new fortification systems and explains how to attack and defend them. The 14 very detailed plates show different types and shapes of fortifications, and can be folded out to be viewed while reading.
With three different library stamps and one small bookplate. Browned and foxed throughout, with the plates still in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall a good copy. Jordan 3983 (9 copies).
