Each volume except the first has an engraving at the head of the first page depicting a library with visitors in it. Complete first edition in 8 uniform volumes of Abraham George Luiscius's great encyclopedia in the original Dutch. It contains "the entire ecclesiastical and secular history" along with a "geographical, historical, political and genealogical description" of the world. The contents are arranged alphabetically. It included articles on the Dutch East and West India Companies (VOC and WIC), the city of Florence and the philosopher Socrates. The 8 volumes are full of information on Japan, for example all the provinces have separate entries and descriptions, and the general part about Japan (vol. V) covers the history, climate, way of life, social hierarchy, government, religion and more.
