Rare first edition of a pamphlet by Arnold van Boeckholt (1621-1691). This polemical tract offers his personal and highly critical account of the controversial capitulation of Deventer in 1672, disputing contemporary narratives and defending his own steadfast opposition to surrender.
Boeckholt was born into a prominent regent family, the son of the jurist Nicolaas van Boeckholt and Machteld Holtinck. In 1649 he married his cousin Aleida van Boeckholt (1635-1680), thereby further consolidating his position within the citys ruling elite. From the mid-17th century onward, he played a significant role in municipal governance, serving repeatedly as a member of the sworn council and, for many years, as burgomaster.
The pamphlet is therefore not merely a narrative of events, but a highly partisan and revealing document, offering insight into the political divisions within Deventers ruling class, between factions aligned with the States and those sympathetic to the House of Orange, as well as into the broader culture of public debate in the Dutch Republic during wartime.
