Two consecutive volumes of the yearbook of the city of Middelburg, which contain the names of the most important people in the city at the time, including council members, city officials, physicians, judges, headmasters, and firefighters, as well as the local preachers, pastors, and rabbis. The Naamwijzer for Middelburg was published annually from the early 18th century onwards, and was printed by the city printer of Middelburg, Johan Coenraad Altorffer (1750-1813), from 1801 to 1809. After his death, his company was continued by his sons and later grandsons, who printed the Middelburgsche naamwijzer until 1900. Both volumes include the Middelburgsche almanak, with information on the holidays, tides, and eclipses. The 1832 edition also includes a short work with tables with conversions from Dutch guilders to French crowns.
With a contemporary annotation ("Burgemeester en wethouder 1831") on the second free flyleaf of the first volume, and another ("Samüel Kwekkeboom") on the front pastedown of the second volume, ad 5 has been signed by the publisher as proof of its authenticity. The boards show traces of use. Occasional annotations and markings in the margins of both volumes, the title page of the second volume is somewhat stained and the leaves are somewhat browned, a newspaper clipping about a local fire inserted in the middle. Otherwise in good condition. Cf. H.P. Abrahams, De pers in Zeeland, 1758-1900 (1912), pp. 242-246; these eds. not in Vandenhole; WorldCat.
