Verner "saw action at the Battles of Abu Klea (17 January 1885) and El Gubar (21 January 1885)" (Raugh). The book opens with a dedication to Queen Victoria, a list of subscribers, a brief preface and a table of contents. Included at the end are two pages of advertisements.
