First English edition of a part of De Montulé's Voyage en Amérique, en Italie, en Sicile et en Egypte, pendant les années 1816, 1817, 1818 et 1819, which was written in the form of series of 77 letters and which was also published in 1821. Of the original collection of 77 letters, the present translation comprises 19 letters in which the author relates of his visits to New York (with a very nice view of the city seen from the West with a steam-boat in the foreground), Philadelphia (including the aquatint plate of the mammoth, exhibited in the Philadelphia National History museum), St. Thomas (2 letters), St. Domingo (2 letters), Port Royal, Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica (3 letters), the Mississippi (on board the ship Vesuvius, 3 letters), Louisville (on the Ohio), Pittsburg, Buffaloe (with the plate depicting Niagara Falls) and Albany. On his travels, the author studied the culture of tobacco, sugar, cotton and wheat. Spine restored; occasionally slightly foxed; binding rubbed.
