Lecointe de Laveau, a French entomologist, was secretary of the Imperial Society of Naturalists of Moscow and had a first-hand knowledge of the city. In 12 chapters he describes Moscow's history, topography, commerce, monuments, and institutions, with (folding) tables providing valuable statistic data. The seventh chapter contains details on public and private art collections and libraries, including the library of Prince Michel Galitzin, who owned a Gutenberg Bible ("Bible de Mayence").
