First edition of a treatise on flatulent gas and its discomforts in the human body, written by the Antwerp physician Joannes Fienus (or Feyens, d. 1585). Fienus was born in Turnhout, Belgium, and probably studied medicine at the University at Leuven. He describes the causes of the gas, such as particular foods and climates, and investigates the organs and places where the gas emerges. He also suggests a wide range of cures and remedies for the flatulence. The treatise was reprinted at Heidelberg in 1589 and 1592. In Amsterdam it was published by J. Janssonius in 1643.
With a 17th-century ownership annotation on the title page ("Ex libris M. Hyacinthi Au...(?), H. Pietrynieez. R. e. p.16.B.") and another underneath ("Pauli Manfred"). The spine is somewhat worn and has been restored, with some loss of material at the top, the title has faded, the boards are slightly stained, lacking the closing ties. The leaves are somewhat browned and foxed. Otherwise in good condition. Belg. Typ. 1140 (1); Bibl. Medica Neerl.
