First edition of the main work of Cornelis Bontekoe, in which he also incorporated several earlier publications. Cornelis (Decker) Bontekoe (1647-1685), studied medicine at Leiden, and was a strong defender of the chemical system of De Boe Sylvius, and a great admirer of Descartes, whose philosophical ideas he applied to medical science. Being a rather difficult character, Bontekoe wandered from city to city, untill at last he ended up as the personal physician of the Electoral Prince of Brandenburg. He was a strong promotor of the use of tea, coffee, chocolate, and tobacco as a means to stay in good health.
