Photograph album, consisting of 16 albumen photographs on loose leaves, on tiger hunting in India in April and May 1886, more specific in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Tiger hunting was one of the main leisure activities in British India. The photographs are signed Herzog von Bragança. It shows photos of tigers they killed and pictures of natives participating in the hunt besides some officials, among others count Ferdinand Trauttmansdorff and Prince Louis Esterházy (1844-1912), a military attaché at the Austrian embassy in London who was in India from 1886-1887 and again from 1890-1891. The collection also offers views of the camps in Baramba and Ubri Khera and the house on Goona (Guna), next to some landscape views, also showing elephants and birds of prey. The last pictures of the collection show the military officials there, including the ones from Central India Horse (a regularly cavalry regiment of the British Indian army) in their uniforms. All photographs are captioned below in a contemporary hand. A photo album with such snapshots of tiger hunting, including such detailed captions, is of great rarity.
Portfolio a little worn around the edges, especially around the spine, Some browning, particularly to the edges of the leaves, and some small spots (not affecting the photographs). Overall an intriguing set of photographs with an interesting provenance which are all still in good condition.
