Uncut and unopened copy of the first edition of a famous translation into verse of Oedipus Coloneus, one of Sophocles' most widely known tragedies. The work has here been bound with Cavaliere Giambatista Giusti's (1758-1829) poetry collection All'amica, both beautifully printed by the Bodoni Press. Giusti was a poet and engineer from Lucca, who made several verse translations of Greek and Latin classics. Edipo Coloneo, however, is his most famous work. It was regularly performed on stage, with incidental music composed by Gioachino Rossini in 1817.
The boards and spine are rubbed, with some loss of material. The work is uncut and partly unopened. Otherwise in good condition. Ad 1: Brooks 1193; ad 2: Brooks 1187.
