Picenorum mathematicorum elogia.
Macerata, Bartolomeo Capitani, 1779. 4to. With a woodcut ornament on the title page, 1 illustration in the text, 23 decorated woodcut initials, and a woodcut headpiece. Contemporary vellum with the manuscript title on the spine, red mottled edges. XVI, 112 pp.
€ 2,500
Rare first and only edition of this bio-bibliographical work discussing important mathematicians and other scientists from the province Piceno, Italy, rom the 16th to the 18th century. Included are, among others, Antonius Accursi, Gregorius Ammiani, Romulus Brogli, Saladinus Ferri, and Democritus Vicomanni. The work is preceded by a dedication to Prospero and Alexandro Marefuschiis, dated Macerata, 1 August 1779 and a preface by the author. A list of errata can be found at the end.
The work is written by Giuseppe Santini (1735-1796), professor of philosophy and mathematics at the University of Macerata. The present work is his most well-known. Our copy contains numerous marginal annotations in ink and an index on the last flyleaf in near-contemporary handwriting. A manuscript annotation on the last flyleaf attributes these notes to Giuseppe Ranaldi (1790-1854), who was a historian, book collector, and author from San Severino Marche.
The vellum is slightly stained on the back. Extensive slightly later annotations in the margins of most of the leaves, a handwritten index in the same hand, and an annotation in a different hand in the back attributing them to Giuseppe Ranaldi (1790-1854). Otherwise in good condition. Riccardi I, p. 420.
