Dutch edition of the popular German encyclopaedia Reales Staats-, Zaitungs- und Conversations-Lexikon by the German geographer and scholar Johann Hübner (1668-1731) followed by the translation of his Curieuses und Natur-, Kunst-, Berg-, Gewerk- und Handlungs-Lexicon. The encyclopaedia was published in at least 25 editions until the end of the 18th century and translated into several languages. The editions were much enlarged, especially during Hübner's lifetime. The edition here translated contained already 26.000 entries. Hübner was known as a committed teacher and rendered outstanding services to geography and religious education.
The first edition of the Dutch translation of the first part appeared in 1732 with the title Staats- en koeranten-tolk in Leiden, followed in 1734 by the second part: the translation of Hübner's Curieuses und Natur-, Kunst-, Berg-, Gewerk- und Handlungs-Lexicon. Our set consist of the first part in its second, and the second part in its first edition.
First leaves of volume one somewhat browned and some minor stains on the binding of volume two, otherwise in very good condition. Edo Bakufu kyûzô Ransho sôgô mokuroku: List of Dutch books collected by the Tokugawa Shogunate, p. 3.
