Late edition of "the first ever monograph on canaries" (Birkhead) by Joseph-Charles Hervieux de Chanteloup (1683-1747), "the ultimate canary connoisseur" (Birkhead) who took care of the canaries of Mme la princesse de Condé. He describes nearly all aspects of canary birds, such as the bird's origin, breeding, different types of canaries, their cages, food, treatment, illnesses and cures, prices, and more, thus providing a very useful handbook. Hervieux was one of the best in training canaries to sing, and the present work includes some music scores with melodies that may be taught to the birds.
In very good condition, only a few small spots and some occasional minor foxing. Binding rubbed along the extremities, corners and top and bottom spine slightly worn and three small wormholes in the spine, but otherwise good. Birkhead, The red canary (2014); Brunet VI (Tabls), 5818; Ronsil 1374; Wood, p. 385.
