€ 1,950
Beautifully lithographed book of views (landscapes, architectural views, seascapes and ruins) of northern France, including Boulogne, Calais, Montreuil, Hesdin, Bapaume, St. Pol, Arras, Wissant, St. Omer, the harbour of Ambleteuse, the Castles of Camblin, Créqui, Hollain, Berne near Bethune, the house and gardens of Mr. de Gomère near St. Omer, etc. Lithographed by Pierre langlumé (1790-1830) after various artists and with informative texts by Hédouin. Nearly all give the artists name, but most appear only once or twice, though "Arnout" seven times (some dated 1828 and 1829) and "Deroy" four times. Only the first 20 plates have accompanying text and one of the later ones is numbered in a different manner but all the plates and their sometimes irregular numbers match the Ghent University Library copy. Hédouin had covered some of these sites in his 1828 Souvenirs historiques et pittoresques du département du Pas-de-Calais, by the same publisher.
Both the text and the plates have generous margins, suggesting this might be a large-paper copy (leaf size (34 x 25.5 cm; text and plates on unwatermarked wove paper). The text leaves and the blank leaves with the plates mounted on them are somewhat foxed, but the plates themselves are almost unaffected, with only an occasional marginal spot; binding slightly rubbed, but still in good condition. KVK (4 copies); not in Abbey, Travel; Thomson/Bobins, The exotic and the beautiful; WorldCat.
