Rare first edition of the primary course on painting by Willem Goeree (1635-1711), bound with the enlarged second editions of his two schoolbooks on drawing and colouring. They were the most popular Dutch manuals on art of the second half of the 17th century, and were consulted by most of the famous Dutch artists of the time. All three remained influential during the 18th century and were also translated into German.
Goerees work combines theory and practice, covering topics such as the history of painting, observation of nature, the use of printed and textual sources, the study of antiquities, and anatomy of both humans and animals. The work further discusses perspective, architecture, and historical subjects, as well as the making of clay figures, the copying of older paintings, and establishing one's name as an artist. The introduction to drawing (first published in 1668) discusses the foundational skills for a beginning artist. The accompanying work on colouring, which was originally written by Geerard ter Brugge and first published in 1616 as Verlichtery kunst-boeck, was substantially revised and expanded by Goeree for its second edition of 1670.
Goeree was born in Middelburg. He showed an interest in the arts and sciences from a young age, but was not allowed to go to university, as his father died young. Instead he became a printer and bookseller, first in Middelburg (1666-77), and later in Amsterdam. His erudition and wide variety of interests is reflected in his publications, which discuss topics as diverse as the art of painting, Jewish history, cosmology, and the ideas of Descartes.
With the purple stamp of Oskar Boden-De Cock from Mechelen on several leaves, and a blue library stamp on the title page of the first work. The vellum is somewhat soiled and stained, with some loss of material at the head of the spine. The leaves are occasionally lightly soiled or stained, without the fly leaves, lacking the engraved frontispiece of ad 2. Otherwise in good condition. Bolten p. 344 and p. 212 ff.; Cat. Kunsthist.
