Very rare and interesting work on blood circulation:
the thesis of a promising student of Boerhaave and Van Leeuwenhoek

STRÖM, Christian Michaëlsson.
Nova theoria motuum reciprocorum machinae animalis, ex partium organicarum structura & proprietatibus, juxta aeternas motuum leges.
Amsterdam, [heirs of Johannes I] Janssonius van Waesberge, 1707. 8vo. Woodcut vignette on title, full-page engraved plate of the blood circulation of the heart, woodcut headpiece and initials. Contemporary full cal. [8], 84, [5], [1 blank] pp.
€ 3,500
Rare second issue of the first and only edition of Christian Ström's thesis, which he had defended at the University of Harderwijk in the same year. It is based on some extremely interesting experiments Ström undertook after learning to construct a microscope under the tutelage of Leeuwenhoek himself. Ström's research sought to delineate the blood circulation around the heart. He mapped this circulation by injecting wax into the veins and following its path. The plate depicts the results. In addition to this, Ström considers the mechanical action of the heart in pumping blood. This allowed him to give a much more detailed picture of blood circulation than William Harvey had done in his famous 1628 treatise presenting the theory of blood circulation.
The book is complete, including the four page stock list of medical books for sale by Janssonius van Waesbergen "Catalogus librorum medicorum apud Janssonio-Waesbergios, in copia prostantium" and the final leaf with the explanation of the plate.
Old owner's inscription on the title-page: "della libraria de Capp(ucins?) del ... (?)". In good condition. Blake p. 436; Hirsch, Biographisches Lexikon der hervorragenden Aerzte, V, p. 565; STCN (2 copies); not in BMN; Garrison & Morton.
