Rare first and only edition of a Dutch adaptation for children, of the account of the second voyage of captain John Ross (1777-1856) to the Arctic regions in search of a northwest passage. The plates depict Eskimos and other polar scenes. The original English edition was first published in 1835 as Narrative of a second voyage in search of a North-West passage; a German edition appeared in the same year. In the present Dutch edition, the journals of Ross, his companion William Light and several other accounts have been adapted into one narrative.
With manuscript school prize tipped in by the teacher H. van den Velden for his pupil J.H. Hink, Boxtel, 27 June 1838. Front hinge loosening; minor waterstain in outer margin of title-page and frontispiece. A good copy. De Gids 1838, pp. 545-47; NCC (4 copies); not in Arctic Bibliography.
