Very rare first and only edition of the Dutch translation of an account of Lord Elgin's mission to China and Japan in the years 1857 to 1859, written by the diplomat, traveller and secretary to Lord Elgin during the Washington negotiations of the reciprocity treaty with Canada in 1846, Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888). The plates depict a reception tent of the Royal commissioner at Tahkoo, the signing of the Tientsin treaty, a view of Mount Fuji, tea gardens in the vicinity of Yedo (Tokyo) and a Japanese funeral. The maps show the course of the rivers Yangtze, Pei ho (Hai), Woosung (Suzhou Creek) and Ningpo (Yong).
