€ 1,250
First and only edition of a Latin oration delivered at the University of Franeker by Samuel Hendrik Manger (1735-1791), Arabist and specialist in Oriental languages and Hebrew antiquities, who had been appointed professor of oriental languages at the University in 1760. It shows his interest in archaeological research carried out in the Near East by means of voyages instigated by the German scholar Johann David Michaëlis. Manger thought this kind of research would herald a new age in our understanding of the scriptures.
Some minor marginal browning and a couple small marginal tears, but still in very good condition. Top of wrappers chipped. An oration on archaeology's contributions to biblical studies, in a stately presentation. STCN; for the author: Biogr. lex. gesch. Ned. protest. I, pp. 155-156; NNBW IX, col. 644.
