Five rare works by the Italian orthopaedist Lorenzo Bruni, all in the original Italian, ad 1 in its second edition and the others in their first (and only?) editions.
Ad. 1: Second edition of Bruni's lecture on the Achilles' tendon, delivered to the Academy of Medical Surgery on 28 July 1838.
Ad. 2: Atlas of 16 lithographed plates (2 double-page) depicting several deformities of human feet, hands, knees, legs and heads as well as some orthopaedic tools.
Ad. 3: Treatise on the benefits of gymnastics.
Ad. 4: Observations on deformities of hands, feet and face in the form of short case studies of people who have those deformities, illustrated with 4 folding lithographed plates.
Ad. 5: 1842 edition of "clinical results" discussing deformities of legs, eyes and the spine, illustrated with 3 lithographed plates, including 1 folding.
The texts and plates are printed on unwatermarked wove paper, but that of the text differs from that of the plates. The paper used for the text of at least ad 4 is a fairly early example of machine-made paper used for quality book-printing (the belt seam left a sort of "watermark" running across leaves 5 and 6 of quire 1, near the foot of the text).
In good condition. Some foxing throughout, largely confined to the text leaves. ICCU Cat. SBN (2, 4, 3, 8, 5 copies); not in Garrison & Morton; Meier, Kiefer cat.; Norman Lib.; Wellcome Library.
