Dedication copy of the first edition of a survey on the geography of the Nile and it's sources. Charles Tilstone Beke (1800-1874) was an English traveller and geographer, best-known for his explorations and studies of the Nile. The present work includes his pioneering essay On the Nile and its Tributaries and contains much new material concerning the latest discoveries in the region, including the data of the expeditions by John Hanning Speke (1827-1864) and Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). The present copy was given by the author to Thomas Hodgkin, MD (1798-1866), the famous physician, pathologist, and reformer.
With an annotation by the author ("Thomas Hodgkin Eg. MD, from the author") at the head of the title page. The spine is damaged, with part of the material missing, the corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed. The work is lightly browned throughout, with a horizontal tear in the folding map, but without loss. Otherwise in good condition. Edwards, Catalogue of books on Africa, 848; cf.
