First and only edition of a finely executed pictorial history of horsemanship from classical Greece and Rome to the date of publication, including the Islamic world: the hand-coloured copy of the Duke of Orleans, in a signed binding by René Othon Meslant (1769-1840), celebrated court binder of the Empire period. The Duke is listed as a co-publisher on the engraved title-page. The main text appears on the last page in two columns, with 7 decorated initials and extensive marginal illustrations and decorations, but there are also shorter texts in the plates.
With the stamp of the military library of Ferdinand Phillipe, Duke of Orleans (1810-1842) on the title-page. Some spotting in text leaves, one plate with old repair in the foot margin, others repaired in the gutter margin, some plates lightly and evenly yellowed.
