First edition of an extensive treatise on palaeontology by the French archaeologist philosopher and mathematician Louis Bourguet (1678-1742). The first part is a compilation of letters relating to Bourguet's previous work, Lettres philosophiques, wherein he compares the processes of the mineral world to processes of the living world. The second part contains sixty plates of fossils, including those unearthed by the author mostly from Switzerland or taken from the works of Lang and Scheuchzer. The 441 illustrations are accompanied by concise explanatory text, a comprehensive bibliography of palaeontology, and a list of international areas where fossils have been found.
With the top margin of the title-page trimmed off without losing text and some wormholes, not affecting the text. Good copy. Honeyman 450; Nissen, ZBI 498; Poggendorff I, cols. 260-261.
