In a magnificent contemporary signed full calf binding over wooden boards, both covers richly tooled in blind: front cover with three triple fillets along the sides; the central panel with diamond-shaped fillets with floral and stamps with the monograms 'IHS', 'ioh(anne)s' and 'ma(thaeus)' in the rhombusses; four large stamps with foliation in the first border (Schunke, I, p.166, nr.227 (Laubstab)), with roundels of the four evangelists in the corners (Schunke, I, p.100, nr.56); signed: 'H' and 'G' in the lower second border (Schunke, I, p.278, nrs.25 and 27); the same fillets, blocks with foliation and roundels with the evangelists on the back cover; two diagonally crossed triple fillets in the central panel with four stamps with coat of arms containing the Arma Christi around a heart in the four compartments (Schunke, I, p.315, nr.106); spine in five compartments with the title in the second compartment lettered in ink on a red painted background and the shalf-mark 'B.88' in the first compartment on a white-painted background; complete with the original elaborately tooled clasps and catches. This binding is made in the Carthusian monastery Marienburg in Weddern near Dülmen for their own library (Schunke, II, 276). Title printed in red and black beginning with a woodcut initial (V), underneath a woodcut of 122x 124mm. with Maria and the infant Christ sitting on a pillow and holding a large cross; at the right probably the publisher is praying; framed by woodcut borders of portraits of saints at the left, of five angels and saints, below and six separate woodcuts of ca. 32x20mm of angels and saints at the right; together in a second border of floral and decorative woodblocks. An interesting and beautiful woodcut of the birth of Christ in a fantasized archtectural setting (98x75mm), flanked by three woodcuts of angels and saints (ca.32x20mm) at either side, in a border of floral woodcut blocks at the beginning of the text. Headline and beginning of the text printed in red. Many small woodcuts (ca.32x20mm) with biblical scenes and saints at the beginning of each chapter (some are bigger) and many woodcut initials. The artist who made these cuts is the famous Lyonese woodcutter G. Leroy II (Baudrier, IX, p. 172). The book is rubricated throughout. (12), (416) leaves. Full description >>
