Early 18th-century(?) sprinkled tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled board edges, edges sprinkled red, rebacked, restored and with new endpapers. With 80 manuscript maps and plans, 75 double-page (2 with a flap folded in), 4 larger folding (including 3 assembled from 1 1/2 sheets), and 1 also double-page in size but assembled from 2 smaller sheets. Most include a scale and 71 are coloured, mostly in opaque gouaches. They show plans of fortifications and towns in the Netherlands (51), Germany (16), Italy (3), France (4), Poland (2), Belgium (2), Malta (1) and Brazil (1). Small 1mo (37.5 x 28 cm). 18th-century mottled calf sewn on 5 cords, gold-tooled with the arms of the Count Palatine of Sulzbach and his wife on each board and richly gold-tooled spine with initials "BP" in top compartment, red and green spine labels in the second and third, marbled endpapers, blue mottled edges. With engraved title-page (the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Henry Frederick, eldest son of King James I of England, the title and the imprint were engraved on 3 separate slips of paper pasted over areas left blank for that purpose) and 117 full-page engraved plates (ca. 26 x 19 cm): 42 numbered plates in part 1, 43 partly-numbered plates in part 2 and 32 numbered plates in part 3. The first plate in each part is signed by the artist Jacob de Gheyn ("IDGheijn in,"), in manuscript in parts 1 and 2 and in the plate in part 3. All plates and the engraved title-page magnificently coloured and lavishly highlighted with silver and gold by a contemporary hand. The plates show exercises with the arquebus (part 1), musket (part 2), and pike (part 3). Although the title and imprint are in German, the dedication and note to the reader are in English, according with the English arms on the title-page, and the texts are in English, French, German and Dutch.
