Elzevier edition intended for a Catholic audience

[PSALTERIUM - ELZEVIER].
Psalterium Davidis, ad exemplar Vaticanum Anni 1592.
Leiden, Johannes and Daniel Elzevier, 1653. 12mo. With an engraved title, several decorated woodcut initials, and woodcut head- and tailpieces. Slightly later red morocco. 381, [1 blank] pp.
€ 750
The Elzevier edition of the Psalms and Sapiential Books, comprising the Psalms together with Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Wisdom, and Ecclesiasticus according to the Clementine Vulgate. Willems observed that the edition was "executed specially with Catholic countries in view", as evidenced by the omission of "Batavorum" from the imprint ("Lugduni" rather than "Lugduni Batavorum"). He also praised the work as "fort jolie", adding that well-preserved, large-margin copies "command high prices." He further noted that the reference to Sixtus V on the letterpress title is not contradictory, since the Clementine Vulgate of 1592 is essentially a corrected version of the Sixtine edition.
With a later ownership annotation ("Mailly") in the inner margin of the engraved title. The binding shows very minor traces of use. The leaves are somewhat browned and occasionally stained, lacking the final blank. Otherwise in good condition. Berghman, Stockholm, 23 ("Un des volumes les plus beaux et les plus recherchés de la collection"); Darlow & Moule 6224; Rahir 736; USTC 1812270; Willems 733; not in the STCN.
