1 BOOK OF HOURS. Manuscript on vellum in Latin for the use of Tournai.
(Tournai, ca. 1480). 4to. Brown blind-stamped calf over boards, inner and outer rectangular frames on sides, consisting of rolls of flowering candelabra, with tripartite floral stamps at corners of inner rectangles and a gold foliate stamp at their centres, six (of originally eight) brass cornerpieces incised with fleurs-de-lis and with small, raised circular bosses (lacking upper left cornerpieces), two brass catches on the upper cover (lacks fastener on the lower cover). The binding is probably of the second quarter of the sixteenth century. Nine full-page miniatures in arched frames, representing in order of appearance: Annunciation (Matins), Arrest of Christ (Lauds), Christ before Pilate: The Handwashing (Prime), Crowning with Thorns (Terce), Carrying of the Cross (Sext), Crucifixion (None), Entombment of Christ (Vespers), Resurrection (Compline) and David in Penitence. capitals stroked with yellow, red rubrics. 1-2 line initials and line endings are in gold on red and blue fields with white tracery. 5-line initials have commencing hours and major new texts are in blue with white tracery on gold fields, with spandrels outside the initials enclosing red with white tracery. 85 lvs.
