Klein. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nuremberg, Friedrich Campe, 1825. 8vo. Original decorated boards, with illustrated border of 12 zodiacal signs, an illustration of northern winds, pouring snow and sending cold winds over skating figures on the frontcover, on the backcover King Winter ordering the cold winds to blow. In the first part of the work, Zindel treats different aspects of skating, such as types of skates, the ice rink, the first gliding strides on the ice, four basic gliding strides, and appropriate clothing. The second part, the Anhang, contains poems and other short articles relating to skating. The poems are by Cramer, Goethe, Herder, Klopstock and Krummacher. There is an interesting account of a tour of twelve cities in North Holland, which four skaters made in 1676 within seventeen hours. The book ends with an article on the Parisian skating fashions in 1824. The attractive illustrations, depicting skates, skaters, an ice-sledge, and the ice rink near Nuremberg are by Johann Adam Klein (1792-1875). The work was reprinted in 1925 (see Kat. der Lipp. Kostümbibl. Thb 9) and in 1980. Very fine copy of this entertaining book for skating enthousiasts.- (Corners binding slightly rubbed).
