Eyewitness to the death of James Cook
ZIMMERMANN, Heinrich. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt, with red morocco title-label. XVI, 200 pp. First French edition of the famous account by Heinrich Zimmermann, able seaman on Cook's Discovery, and eyewitness to the illustrious captain's death. The present account is one of the earliest published narratives on the third voyage of Cook, and also one of the earliest descriptions of the Hawaiian Islands. In the description of Hawaii, the account of the death of James Cook is emphasized. This edition in French is extremely rare, and interesting because of the added notes on for example the life of James Cook. Zimmermann kept his journal despite the instructions, and although it is not free of errors "... it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiates it from the other accounts" (Forbes). Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; spine repaired).
Beddie 1629; Forbes 47; Holmes 44; not in Sabin, or Howes.
