Amsterdam, Markus Wilhelmsen Doornik, 1664. 12mo. Contemporary vellum with written title on spine. Frontispiece, 2 full page plates, 4 folding plates and 52 double-page plates. (22), 567 pp.

First edition of an interesting and richly illustrated description of Amsterdam. Philipp Von Zesen (1619-1689), was a German poet who came to live at Amsterdam in 1661. Being new in the city Von Zesen was interested in the history and the expansion of the town. His special interest was everything the city had to offer at his time, such as the famous buildings and churches, the stock- and commodity markets, the stages of the theatres, the East- and West India Company (VOC & WIC), the bridges, like the "Nieuwe Brugh" and the "Amstel Brugh" going to the Weesper poort, one of the city gates, others gates to go to Leiden, Haarlem and Utrecht and the famous labyrint, etc. Von Zesen being a Lutheran himself, made from this books a very unique and reliable source for all matter concerning the Amsterdam Lutheran community.

Nice copy.- (Slightly browned and stained in some places).
