(2), XXVIII, 97, (1) pp. Rare second edition of this important account of the trade relations between Scotland and the city of Veere in the Low Countries. The work gives an extensive description of the staple contracts between Scotland and Veere. The first staple contract, which set out the privileges to be enjoyed by Scottish traders, was drawn up in 1541. The introduction of the work is an historical account of the staple written by the 'private gentleman', Charles Stewart, who was at that time the deputy conservator at London. The main text is written by James Yair, a minister of the Scotch Church in Veere (Campvere), Zeeland. Veere was Scotland's staple port from 1541 until 1799. Scottish merchants could export certain goods such as wool, coal, tiles, arms and ammunition to Veere without paying customs. Veere was a prosperous trading city in the 17th and 18th centuries. The work, published by order of the general convention of Royal Burrows in July 1749, was first printed in 1749 by R. Flemming in Edinburgh. The text was also published in the same year in An account of the Scotch trade in the Netherlands and of the staple port in Campvere (London, Wilson & Nicol, 1776 (Cat. Goldsmith's Library 11429). Fine copy with armorial book plate of 'I. Johannnes Whitefoard Mackenzie Armigeri' and small oval library stamp of the Solicitors Supreme Court on the title.
