Contemporary vellum with title partly written in ink on spine. With beautifully engraved frontispiece depicting all different conjuring games, and over 50 woodcut illustrations in text. [8], 512, [21], [2 blank] pp Very rare third edition of easily the most popular Dutch conjuring book of the 17th and 18th century. It was republished many times, amusing generations of children as well as adults at home and at parties. Landwehr ascribes the book to Willem Goeree, who first published the book at Middelburg in 1679. Goeree probably choose the pseudonym Witgeest (Whiteghost) as a guarantee that the book contained white rather than black magic. The section on drawing and colouring in Het Natuurlijk Toverboek, was taken from Goeree's Inleydinge tot de Algemeene Teyken-Konst (1668). This third edition is divided into 5 sections and explains about 500 conjuring tricks, including card tricks, mathematical tricks, making of glass, anamorphoses, camera obscura, memory tricks and many more. The last 45 pages contain recipes for perfumed soaps, cosmetics, etc. Leaves M3 & 2C2 have a small marginal loss of paper not affecting the text. Fine copy.
Landwehr, De Nederlander uit en thuis, p. 148-50; Muller, 555; STCN (3 copies); De Vries, Pop. proza 528-529; Waller 1870-1877.
