(Amsterdam, Kornelis de Wit, 1759). Sm.8vo. Wrappers. With engraved title and numerous illustrations on 8 full-page engraved plates. (26), 24 pp.

As he himself proudly announced on the title, De Wit introduced an entirely new genre of primer, and at the same time a new method of teaching small children. In an interesting preface the author-publisher explains how children easily and happily will learn and remember just by looking at the pictures, especially when they show things familiar to them, the letters of the alphabet, the numbers, and even the names and values of the current pieces of money. New also, compared to the "Haneboek", is that De Wit here combined the children's first A B book with their first Number-book, teaching them to read and count simultaneously from their first primer. The 3 plates with coins remained a rare novelty. The reading exercises however, still  were very similar to those found in the traditional "Haneboek", with the Articles of Faith, the Ten Commandments, prayers, etc.

Good copy of an important A B book.
