First and only edition of a rare popular account of a trip from Paris to Naples, by way of Tirol, and from Naples back to the Netherlands by way of Switzerland and along the Rhine, written by Adriaan van der Willigen (1766-1841), a young Dutchman and - to judge from his portrait - a lover of the good life, who made many study trips and journeys to Germany, France and Italy, mostly in the company of his friend C. Evers, to study the art of painting and to visit the most important art collections of early 19th century Europe. He was one of the first art historians and a famous collector of art and books.
The finely engraved plates in this work show a view of Stuttgart, the costumes of Tirol, the amphitheatre in Verona, ice-pleasure on the lagoon of Venice, a large folding view of Naples seen from the Bay, the lake of Albano, Pompei, the costumes of Roman peasants, the ruins of the Temple of Peace, costumes of the women of Leghorn, a view of Bologne, a Swiss farmer with a little girl blowing the Alp-horn, and a view of Frankfurt.
Van der Willigen wrote a number of other travel books (see Tiele 1212-3), and a treatise on the causes of the lack of good history painters in the Netherlands and the means to train them, which was published by the Teylers's Tweede Genootschap. Most famous he became by the publication, together with R. van Eynden, of his history of Dutch painting, the Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche schilderkunst, in 4 vols, 1816-40.

Good copy.- (Sl. defects to spines).
Tiele 1213, note; not in Buisman, Waller, Muller, De Vries, etc.; Saalmink, p. 2187, lists 4 copies.
