Original and only edition of this fine example of a 'Splendid Ceremony', extensively described and richly depicted, concerning the journey of Charles II of Stuart during the period 25 May till 2 June 1660, from the Dutch city of Breda, where Charles had stayed in exile, to Delft and The Hague, and his setting sail from the port of Scheveningen, to England to regain his Crown, made possible by Lord George Monk. Although the text was originally written in French, the work was simultaneously published in The Hague in French, and in the Dutch and English translations, all editions containing the same finely engraved plates, showing Charles's arrival in Delft and The Hague (on the Vijverberg), his reception in The Hague with a banquet at the Mauritshuis (the later William III sitting next to Charles), two plates of Charles II addressing the Dutch Parliament, one with the members standing, by Theodor Matham, and one with the members seated and Charles's departure from Scheveningen, after a very fine design by the famous artist Adriaan van de Venne. All the plates are in their fresh first states (see: Muller).
The author of the text probably was the colourful Abraham van Wicquefort (1598-1682), who after having been the Resident in Paris for the Elector of Brandenburg from 1626 to 1658, was appointed Historian of Holland by his patron the Pensionary Johan de Witt. He also was the Resident in The Hague of the famous art collector and collector of books, the Duke of Brandenburg August of Wolfenbüttel. Abraham van Wicquefort had access to important government papers and securities and this is exactly what the publisher is saying in his preface: that the story is based on the most first-hand and valuable sources and eye-witness accounts.book is concluded by a long laudatory poem on the text by the Dutch poet J. Westerbaen and a shorter poem in praise of George Monk, 'Brittanici Imperii Regisque restaurator' by Jacobus Baselius.

Fine copy of a rare and beautiful work. -(Some minor restorations; new ties to binding; one plate somewhat shorter.
