Amsterdam, Steven van Esveldt, 1750. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt. With engraved frontispiece by Frankendaal, small engraved vignette with a landscape on title. (8), 6, 96 pp.

First edition of a manual on keeping canaries. Twenty six short chapters are devoted to subjects, from the history of canary keeping to singing and diseases of canaries. Several species of canaries are named in chapter four, where the author also gives a hierarcy of canaries. Wickede is one of the earliest sources where more canaries are named with other colours than green or yellow. He names 'assante', 'isabel', 'sneeuw witte' (snow white), etc. Chapter eighteen elaborates on the singing of the canary.
The author says that the canary can be the most beautiful singer of all small birds, even more beautiful than the nightingale. He advises to play the flute for the canary, covering it's cage with some cloth for concentration. Three lessons a day are recommended. Although the author writes that one can play any tune, he does give three short preludes as an example. In his preface Wickede declares that he has written the book on the basis of his experience of 25 years and to emend to enlarge the work by Hervieux which was translated into Dutch by Moubach.
On verso of the title there is a declaration of authenticity - as there are many bad pirated editions, as the publisher says - signed by Steven van Esveldt.

Good copy.- (Binding somewhat shaved).
