John White (born 1756?) was appointed chief surgeon on board of one of the ships of the British fleet under Arthur Phillip which transported convicts to Australia. On its way the ship landed in Brazil at Rio de Janeiro, where White got the opportunity to experience the festivities for the birthday of the Prince of Brazil, and to perform an amputation in one of the local hospitals. During his spare time, White excercised his interest in natural history and had assigned to him a number of convicts, notably Thomas Watling, who were skilled draughtsmen. His first illustrations were included in Stockdale's edition of Phillip's Voyage. He described all his experiences in his diaries, from which the present work is a compilation. The work also contains descriptions of stops at the Cape and Norfolk Island, as well as comments on early settlement in Australia. The second part of the work consists of the translation of selected sections of the appendix as well as personal notes and remarks on the main text by the translator, Pougens. Good, uncut copy.
