Two extremely rare lists of the Dutch and German whaling ships put to sea in 1774
[WHALING - GREENLAND].Lyst van de Hollandse, Hamburger EN Breemer Groenlandsvaarders, anno 1774. Uitgevaaren. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Heirs Jacob Michiel Brouwer, (1775). 2 works in one vol. 8vo. Loose in contemporary overlapping vellum wrappers. Woodcut printer's device with whaling scene on both titles. 24, 8 pp. Interesting and extremely rare document for the history of whaling in the waters around Greenland and in David Strait, west of Greenland. At the end (as second half of the last quire, p. 1-8) is added with a separate title-page, and with the same woodcut printer's device, the: Lyst van de Hollandse en Hamburger, Straat Davidsvaarders, anno 1774 uitgevaaren (Amsterdam, Heirs of Jacob Michiel Brouwer, (1775)). The booklet contains two lists of (1) the shipowners ('Directeurs'), (2) names of the ships, (3) names of the captains, (4) number of whales caught, (5) number of barrels ('Vaten'), (6) weight of whale blubber, and (7) dates of return of the ships. The columns 4-7 are left blank, to be filled in by hand later. This is done by several contemporary hands in ink and pencil in almost half of the cases. All the ships returned to their home ports in July or August, having caught between 1 and 9,5 whales. Listed are all the Dutch and North German whaling ships (most of them with Dutch names, and Dutch captains!), which set sail to Greenland (first list) and Davis Strait (second list) during the year 1774, arranged to their home ports. First list:Amsterdam (42 ships), Dordrecht (1), Rotterdam (7), Alkmaar (1), Zaandam (17), Wessaanen (4), Zaandyck (2), De Koog (2), Jisp (1), De Ryp (4), Harlingen (1), Hamnurg (41), Altona (6), Glukstadt (3), Colmer (1), De Oost (1) and Bremen (4). Second list: Amsterdam (24), Rotterdam (1), Zaandam (10), De Koog (3), Oossaanen (3), Wessaanen (2), Zaandyk (2), Crommenie (1), Wormerveer (2), Hamburg (3). Printers as Jacob Michiel Brouwer and his heirs apparently published such lists every year. There are, however, only a few printed lists known from the period 1753-1802: for 1764, 1770, 1773, 1779-80, 1783-89, 1791 and 1802, but our list is unrecorded ! Good copy.
Sabin 42884 (list for 1764); cf. Beijers cat. Honig collection, 317; The Duth Nat. Cat. (NCC) lists only three copies (for 1753, 1791 and 1802).
