Title in red & black with engraved vignette by J. van S(chley), and 31 full-page engraved plates by Bernard Picart ('den Romein') (12), J. van Schley (13), S. Fokke (1), and P. Tanjé (5) after Charles Coypel (25), N. Cochin (2), Tremolières (2), J.P. le Bas (1) and the famous French painter F. Boucher (1). XXVI, 420 pp. First and only edition - published in the same year and by the same publisher as the first French edition: Les principales avantures de l'admirable Don Quichotte ... - of this interesting adaptation in Dutch of parts of the original Spanish text of 'Don Quichote' by Cervantes by the rather notorious Dutch author, Jacob Campo Weyerman (1677-1747). The book is beautifully illustrated with the large engraved plates by the best Dutch and French book illustrators of the period, which illustrate the famous adventures of Don Quichote. Weyerman also included a Life of Cervantes and added explanations in verse to the engraved plates. The 'Life' is the first biography of Cervantes published in Dutch. It is the translation/adaptation of the biography by Don Gregorio Mayans (1737) or of the French translation by Pierre Daudé (Amsterdam 1740). Fine copy.- (Title somewhat soiled).
