Rare mathematical study on the construction of sun-dials by Eberhard Welper, here newly published with useful observations and enlarged with a second part by Johann  Christoph Sturm. The original work by Welper, nor other work by Welper is found recorded in Poggendorff, Honeyman, Wheeler Gift, etc., nor is the author to be found in the "Nouvelle Biographie Générale", the "Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie", the "Dictionary of Scientific Biography", etc. Works by the new editor, J.C. Sturm, are found recorded but not the present one, while Sturm also is being treated in the biographies, although not in the "Dictionary of Scientific Biography". Only the BMC lists several works by Welper, including the present renewed edition by Sturm.
Johann Christoph Sturm (1635-1703), professor in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Altdorff, published a considerable number of scientific and philosophical works, corresponded with the learned men of his time, and greatly contributed to the expansion of scholarly interest in physics in Germany, a.o. being the first to found a Chair for experimental physics at the University. He enjoyed international fame as a scientist, but as a philosopher he was an eclectic.

Good copy of a rare work.- (Occasionally browned)
