First edition of the translation into Dutch of Isaac Watts' The world to come or, discourses on the joys or sorrows of departed souls at death, and the glory or terror of the resurrection (first edition: London 1739), enlarged with contributions by Daniel Gerdes (1698-1765), Professor of Theology at the University of Groningen and Theodorus van Schelluyne (1692-1776), an Amsterdam minister. A second edition appeared in 1751, a third in 1767. Gerdes is the author of the second preface (pp. I-LXXI), dated Groningen, 20 December 1745, including a letter by Theodorus van Schelluyne, dated Amsterdam 13 October 1745 (pp. V-XXVIII).
The hymn-writer Isaac Watts (Southampton 1674 -1748) was educated at the grammar school from John Pinhorne in Southampton and later at an academy where he learned the classical languages, logic, Hebrew and divinity.
Watts was one of the most popular writers of his day. His educational manuals were still standard works in the middle of the 18th century and the success of Watt's hymns approached that of the new version of the Psalms.
