Arnhem, widow of J.F. Hagen/De Haas, 1715. 4to. Modern vellum. With a woodcut Gelderland coat of arms on the title-page and 8 folding engraved maps (18.5 x 28.5 cm), designated A-C and 1-5. Further with 1 woodcut decorated initial and bands of cast fleurons. (1), (1 blank), 24 pp. plus plates.

First edition of an official publication of the provincial States assembly of Gelderland standardizing water rights in the province, including rights to shifting land and to property that washes ashore, rights of transport, rights to build jetties or groynes, rules for surveying waterways, etc. The text is divided into 55 numbered articles. It includes eight folding river and riverbank maps drawn for the occasion by Isaack van Heuvel (ca. 1675?-1745) of Zutphen, surveyor to the province of Gelderland, and engraved by Mattheus Berkenboom (d. ca. 1715) in Nijmegen. These maps are presented as examples to illustrate various questions of property and other rights, with no designation of the specific places shown, but from the breadth of the river one may suppose they depict parts of the Waal river on the province's southern border.
Maps A-C show the same series of properties (with owners' names) along the water (A in mirror-image relative to B and C), with the property lines extended into the water and with various features marked with letters. Maps 1-5 show small pieces of the river with extensive instructions for surveying various features, with reference to various points marked with letters. Churches, houses, windmills, trees, boats, horse-drawn wagons, etc., are also depicted on the maps. The province having no coast on the open ocean, the rights are primarily concerned with rivers, though they may apply to the Zuyder Zee coast as well. A second edition appeared in 1726.

In very good condition and nearly untrimmed, with only a small spot in a few leaves, slightly affecting an occasional word of the text.
H.A. v. Spaendonck, Cat. v.d. Arnhemse Drukken 174; Picarta (6 copies); STCN (7 copies).
